Chess players are invited to launch of weekly casual play series at the open-air shopping district

WHAT:

Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. is partnering with the Santa Monica Chess Club to host a chess tournament on Sunday, June 11 at 11 a.m. The tournament marks the launch of Chess Sundays, which will turn the 1200 block of the Third Street Promenade into an outdoor chess destination for the public to engage in weekly casual play every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout the summer. Participants are invited to meet new players and test their skills against multiple opponents, plus at the kickoff tournament, a grand prize will be awarded to the winner. Chess boards will be provided, but players are welcome to bring their own chess sets and timers. Chess Sundays are free to the public and open to all ages. 

WHEN:

Chess Sundays launch on Sunday, June 11 at 11 a.m. and continue every Sunday through the summer from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

WHERE:

1200 Block of Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica, CA 90401

REGISTRATION:

Admission to the chess tournament on Saturday, June 11 is $10. Advance registration is required via Eventbrite. Registration closes on Sunday, June 4 at 10 p.m.

Participation is free for all following Chess Sunday events.
